Course Description:

The Community-Based Clinical Education (CBCE) program at UCLA School of Dentistry has increased access to care for vulnerable populations while enhancing the students’ education and enhancing clinical operations for affiliate sites. The dean’s message of “Bringing the dental school to the community” is resonating loud and clear with dental students and specialty residents treating over 16,000 patients and delivering 40,000 procedures to the most vulnerable in your communities in less than three years.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to learn the value of adding Community-Based Clinical Education for enhancing the student’s education while assisting dental practices to increase access to care for vulnerable populations, including specialty care.

Oral healthcare providers will gain knowledge in non-traditional practice opportunities with the potential to add specialty care and recruit future dental associates.

Participants will learn how their practices can be part of UCLA’s CBCE program

Dr. Bill Piskorowski holds a DDS from Loyola University, Chicago, IL and practiced dentistry from 1979 to 2006, which he left to take a full-time position at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry as Director of Outreach and Community Affairs. As Asst. Dean for Community-Based Dental Education, he grew the program from a 3-week experience for dental students at 4 external sites with 8 preceptors in 2006 to a maximum of 12 weeks of experience with over 30 sites and 117 credentialed preceptors. In 2017, he accepted the position of Associate Dean for Community-Based Clinical Education (CBCE), Health Science Clinical Professor at UCLA School of Dentistry. The program echoes the vision of the Dean by bringing the Dental School to the Community. In its’ humble beginnings, the CBCE program has treated over 15,000 patients delivering over 30,000 procedures seeing each 4th year dental student providing 6 weeks of service in their 4th year with plans of expansion.
