Course Description:

Dental caries in children remains the most prevalent chronic condition among US children and the most unmet health care need of poor children across the country. As much as 80% of caries incidence is experienced by only 20-25% of the population. Understanding the infectious nature of dental caries and the transmission of cariogenic microorganisms provides new insight to potential prevention strategies and restorative approaches.

As oral health care providers, we aim at preventing and alleviating the complications of dental caries, like pulpal infection, relieving associated symptomatology and ultimately, preserving the tooth. However, specific challenges and considerations exist when managing children. Generally, pediatric patients are poor historians, sensibility testing can be unreliable and chairside cooperation may be compromised. In addition, primary and young permanent teeth have anatomical differences that mandate specific treatment strategies.

Through the presentation of numerous clinical cases, participants will understand the multifactorial nature of dental caries and be exposed to developing preventive and restorative treatment approaches based on the individual patient’s risk.

Course Objectives:

  • Review the evidence-based knowledge behind our understanding of the cause and treatment of dental caries in children;
  • Recognize the need for individual preventive measurements associated with restorative approaches;
  • Understand the guiding principles used during assessment and removal of carious tissue;
  • Determine the most recommended minimally invasive treatment for teeth with deep carious lesions: Indirect Pulp Treatment (IPT), Stepwise Excavation, Intermediate Therapeutic Restoration (ITR), Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
