Leadership is difficult and the dentist in private practice gets little to no education in leadership in dental school. Many articles, books and presentations offer to guide us through our leadership challenges. We can even undertake formal study in business administration to open minds to management theory and practice. So how it that the truly great organizations and great teams find a way to harness the leadership potential of their people and to create a culture where great leadership skill are encouraged to develop. How to motivate people, how to cherish people, how to set high standards, how to deal with success and how to deal with failure are some of the key elements in creating a culture of world-class excellence that is sustainable generation after generation. This presentation will draw upon experiences from world-renowned institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, with their myriad complexities of success in education, clinical care and research, and describe scientific research from clinical care and from the business world, and showcase key management fundamentals learned at MIT that are the hallmarks of well-run business entities.
